What causes constipation - really?
Th 5 most common 'what causes constipation' triggers are:
1. Water/fluid loss/dehydration
This can be a major obstacle. See my page on dehydration..

2. Lack of Digestive Enzymes
Are you getting any fresh or raw food in your diet? If not, this could be major in causing your problem.Learning about this, has single handedly helped many people I know personally, to eliminate constipation they've had all their lives. See my Digestive enzymes page here..

3. Probiotic bacterial imbalance
You for sure have heard of this lately, it's all over the news.Probiotics can very definitely help prevent what causes constipation. Just don't believe all the commercials about yogurt---it usually take something stronger than that.
4. Lack of Fiber
This can be an issue if the diet is highly refined (white flour and sugars) and low on fruits and vegetables. Your intestines need these foods to prevent constipation. When high water content fiber (fruits and vegetables) is not present in the diet, it becomes difficult for the colon to move foods through. This is sort of like what happens to mud when it dries, it clings to whatever it dried on - in this case, the wall of the colon. Refined foods and certain oils make this much more difficult on the colon. See my 'foods that cause constipation' page here..

Other additional factors:
1. Anxiety, ADD, ADHD, High Anxiety, stress and depression
These can be huge factors causing constipation. It is notable that science and medicine have both put much emphasis as of late on the idea that anxiety and stress in general have a tremendous effect on the physical body. It is well accepted that constipation can be one of those effects, especially for people under high stress and children with ADD type symptoms. Some people feel so much stress at their job that they actually put off going to the washroom for hours. Yes, I mean hours!
2. Lack of Exercise
This is very overlooked in creating a regular bowel movement schedule. Sadly, most people do not get enough, if any exercise at all. Ask anyone who has life long constipation if exercise helps them stay regular, I have never had anyone tell me it did not help them.
3. Prescription drugs
In most cases the manufacturing company and prescribing doctors are aware of the drugs that cause this and are able to tell patients what to expect.
4. More serious health conditions
Structural blockages and inflammatory intestinal diseases such as..
CrohnsCeliacDiverticulitisColon cancerThese should most definitely be ruled out as possible constipation causes by your health care provider.
